Papacy of Innocent V begins 1276

Following the death of Pope Gregory X on the 10 January 1276, Pierre de Tarentaise, was elected Pope Innocent V on the 21st of January 1276.1
Born in 1224, Pierre de Tarentaise joined the Dominican Order of Preachers at the age of 16 in 1240. He graduated as master in sacred theology at the University of Paris, where he won a distinction as a professor. He was elected archbishop of Lyon, June 6, 1272, a post which he held until he was made cardinal bishop of Ostia by Pope Gregory X at the consistory of June 3, 1273.2 3
Innocent V was the first member of the Dominicans to become Pope.
