Having been held prisoner at Pontefract Castle since the end of December 1399, Richard II was declared dead on the 14th of February 1400. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown but it is thought that he was either starved to death or killed by Henry IV following the realisation, after the Epiphany Rising, that keeping him alive would increase the risk of further rebellions.
