Following the death of his father Louis VI of France, Louis VII is crowned king of France, on Christmas day 1137, at Bourges Cathedral.

He was first married to Eleanor of Aquitaine, and both of them went on the Second Crusade. Returning to France the marriage broke down and they divorced in 1152. Eight weeks later Eleanor married Henry II of England. During Louis' reign he supported Thomas à Becket against Henry II of England, and also gave support to Henry's sons when they rebelled against Henry.
