Jacob Theme Pages

Son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham, Jacob is a key patriarch in the Book of Genesis. He is said to have received his father’s blessing through deceit and later wrestled with an angel, after which his name was changed to Israel. Jacob became the father of twelve sons, who founded the twelve tribes of Israel.

Dated between 1160 - 1170 this image of Jacob wrestling with an angel can be found in the Palatine Chapel, Sicily.

 

This stained glass representation of Rachel is by Edward Burne-Jones and dates from 1878. The glass is in the south chancel window of St Etheldreda and St Wilfrid Guilsborough Northamptonshire.

This stained glass window, designed by Henry Holiday and made by James Powell & Sons (Whitefriars Glass) in 1891, depicts Jacob and Moses, two patriarchs of the Old Testament whose lives embody revelation, covenant, and divine calling. Like Holiday’s other biblical pairs in Salisbury Cathedral, the window combines vivid narrative symbolism with refined artistic unity, transforming scriptural history into radiant glass and light.
