St Simon - Bourges Cathedral, Choir Clerestory
1210 to 1215

The right lancet contains St Simon, who is shown without the saw that later became his recognised attribute. Instead, he raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing while holding a book in his left. This emphasis on teaching authority rather than martyrdom is consistent with several early thirteenth-century apostolic cycles. The vivid reds, greens, and blues of the figure stand out against a patterned border shared with the other two apostles.
Context
Placed at the right of the group, Simon completes the triad of Bartholomew–Matthew–Simon. The grouping likely reflects liturgical reading orders rather than narrative continuity.
