This companion lancet, to that of St Andrew, shows St John the Evangelist, identified by the inscription S. IOHANNES EV. at the base. The youthful, beardless face and the flowing drapery, deep blue mantle over red under-garment, are characteristic ways of distinguishing John from the older apostles. He holds a small codex in one hand, emphasising his role as author of the Fourth Gospel, while his other hand is lifted in a teaching or declamatory gesture.

The canopy above the figure matches that of St Andrew in design and palette, employing strong reds and blues set within the geometric patterned border that typifies the Bourges workshop. John’s posture and gesture mark him as the contemplative theologian and visionary, in contrast to Andrew’s more reserved apostolic pose.

As with the other apostolic lancets of the clerestory, the figure is presented frontally and hieratically, intended to be seen at distance as part of the wider cycle of apostolic witnesses encircling the choir.
