SS John and Joseph of Arimathea - Salisbury Cathedral
Submitted by walwynIn this stained glass window from Salisbury Cathedral, designed by Henry Holiday in 1891 for James Powell & Sons, two figures stand side by side in balanced composition and clear, vivid color.
On the left is Saint John the Evangelist, shown as a young man with a calm, focused expression. He wears white and gold robes and holds a book, representing his Gospel. At his feet is an eagle, the traditional symbol of John, used to represent his clear and elevated understanding of the divine. His halo bears the inscription “S. IOH.”
To the right stands Saint Joseph of Arimathea, portrayed as an older man with a beard. His garments are richly patterned in white and gold, and he holds a golden vessel, alluding to his role in the burial of Christ or the later legend connecting him with the Holy Grail. His halo carries the inscription “S. JOSEPH.”
The background and borders are filled with geometric and floral patterns in pale blues, greens, and whites. The design shows Henry Holiday’s typical precision and restraint, figures are lifelike yet idealized, the colors balanced and harmonious, and the overall effect one of quiet dignity and devotional focus.
