Saint Philip - Bourges Cathedral, Choir Clerestory

Philip is shown standing beneath a triangular canopy, robed in a vivid red mantle over a pale tunic. He holds a closed book at chest height with both hands. The inscription S PHELIPVS occupies the base panel.
Iconography
This Bourges depiction is notably restrained. Philip is presented only with a book, without the cross-staff or cross-topped sceptre that become standard in later medieval cycles. Here, the book signals his apostolic authority and teaching role rather than referencing specific traditions about his martyrdom.
Stylistic Notes
The heavy red mantle, deep-set eyes, and oval head typify the Bourges workshop around 1210–1215. The figure’s stillness and frontal pose place it firmly within the early Gothic clerestory style, which emphasises calm dignity and linear clarity.
