Saint Peter Bourges Cathedral, Choir Clerestory

The lancet shows St Peter standing full length against a deep blue ground, framed by the characteristic Bourges border of alternating red and blue lozenges. He wears a blue mantle over a pale tunic, the calm posture and large halo giving him the expected prominence of the leading apostle.
Peter holds a single key in his left hand, the familiar emblem of his authority from Matthew 16:19. In his right hand he carries a long cross-staff, held diagonally across the body. This combination—key and cross—is characteristic of early French representations, especially in contexts that avoid duplication of attributes across the apostolic cycle.
Iconographic Notes
The single key is sufficient to identify him unambiguously, while the cross-staff reinforces his primacy without introducing narrative or martyrdom imagery. His bearded face, expressive eyes, and slightly inclined head are consistent with the stylistic idiom of the Bourges clerestory workshop.
