1440 to 1460

This bronze statue of David by Donatello as pubescent youth was the first freestanding nude male figure since classical times. Commissioned by Cosimo de’Medici for the Palazzo Medici it was created sometime between 1440-60. The statue makes a break from tradition not only in depicting a nude figure but also in showing David as a youth rather than as a King.
