Bronze David by Donatello - Bargello Florence
1440 to 1460

This bronze statue of David by Donatello ⓘ as pubescent youth was the first freestanding nude male figure since classical times. Commissioned by Cosimo de’Medici for the Palazzo Medici it was created sometime between 1440-60. The statue makes a break from tradition not only in depicting a nude figure but also in showing David as a youth rather than as a King.
