The 10th edition of Systema Naturae by Carlo Linnaeus was published in 1758. This is considered to be the first work to consistently apply a binomial classification to the animal kingdom. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature chose 1758 to be the starting date of zoological nomenclature and that Systema Naturae should be considered to have been published on the 1st of January 1758.
