Following the death of Pope John III on July 13, 574, Benedict I was elected pope, though at the time of his election he was not a cardinal. His consecration was delayed until the 2nd of June 575 due to the Lombard invasion of the Italian peninsular which made confirmation of the election by Emperor Tiberius II in Constantinople difficult.1
