Papacy of Gregory X begins 1271
Submitted by walwynmardi, September 1, 1271
Following the death of Pope Clement IV on the 29th of November 1268, the archdeacon of Liège, Tebaldo Visconti, was elected as Pope Gregory X on the 1st of September 1271. This is the longest period between Popes and was caused by a dispute between the French and Italian Cardinals. The dispute was eventually resolved due to pressure from Phillip III of France, and other European monarchs, after it was agreed that a committee of six cardinals would decide the matter.
