Following the death of William II of England, his younger brother Henry siezed the throne, taking advantage of his eldest brother Robert Curthose being away on the First Crusade. Henry gained the support of the barons by signing a Charter of Liberties, and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on the 5th of August 1100. The coronation was performed by the Bishop of London as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Anselm, was in exile at the time, by William II over the investiture controversy, This was a conflict between the church and secular authorities across Europe over the right to appoint Bishops.
