Madonna-and-Child Theme Pages

A representation of Mary with the infant Jesus.

Commissioned in 1508 as a black wooden copy of the 13th century silver Madonna that once stood on the main altar at Chartres Cathedral. 1

 

This painting, in the Uffizi Gallery florence, of the "Madonna and Child" was created by Correggio between 1508-1510.

Located in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, this sculpture of Madonna and Child Enthroned on a Crescent Moon, is dated to between 1510 and 1520, by Niklaus Weckmann.

 

This painting, 1511, currently in the Kunsthistorisches museum, Vienna, is by Hans Holbein the Elder, and before that it was held in the monastery of St. Paul im Lavanttal, Carinthia.

This painting entitled "Virgin and Child with Pear" (1512) is by Albrecht Dürer, is in the Kunsthistorisches museum Vienna. The pear in Christian Art symbolises Christ’s compassion and the sweetness of faith.

This Madonna and Child (1514) is by Fra Bartolomeo, in the Dominican monastery of San Marco. The fresco was originally in the Maddalena monastery in Caldine but was moved to San Marco in 1867.

Dated to 1520 this crowned Virgin and Child is in bay 36 of Evreux Cathedral.

The east window of the Church of Saint-Étienne at Pruniers-en-Sologne presents a striking modern interpretation of the Virgin and Child, surrounded by a constellation of Marian symbols drawn from the Litany of Loreto. Executed in the mid-twentieth century by the artist L. Gouffault, whose name appears inscribed at the base of the composition, the work exemplifies the post-war revival of sacred stained glass in rural France.

This 1955 stained glass representation of the Madonna and Child is by Francis Chigot of Limoges (1879-1960), and can be found in Saint-Pardoux, Mont d'Ore.
