This is a detail of the sculpture on the western facade of Bourges Cathedral. It is part of the Tympanum of the Last Judgement that was completed in about 1240. In this scene demons are carrying the damned to roast in a heated cauldron.
This mosaic from the Cathedral of Monreale portrays a dramatic episode from the life of Saint Castrense, one of Sicily’s most revered early bishops. The scene combines two moments from his legend into a single, flowing narrative that celebrates his power to deliver both souls and sailors from evil.
This is a detail from "St Benedict at Prayer" (c1475) by Neroccio di Landi. According to legend Benedict had hid himself away in a cave and was supplied with food by a monk called Romain who rang a bell when he lowered the food. The devil threw a stone to break the bell.
