Vigin and Child - Bourges Cathedra

This early Gothic lancet presents the Virgin Mary standing frontally, supporting the Christ Child on her left arm. Mother and Son share a radiant presence: Mary in long, rhythmically folded drapery, and Christ raising His right hand in blessing.

The deep red–blue geometric border is characteristic of the Bourges workshops active in the first quarter of the thirteenth century.

Iconographic notes
The Christ Child’s solemn gaze and mature facial modelling continue Romanesque traditions, emphasising His divinity rather than infancy. The shared nimbus underlines Mary’s role as Theotokos, a central theme in Bourges’ imagery.
