Entombment and Resurrection - Litchborough Northamptonshire

This two-light stained-glass window of 1891, by Ward & Hughes ⓘ, presents paired scenes of the Entombment and the Resurrection.
The left-hand light depicts the Entombment (St Luke ⓘ 23:53). Christ’s lifeless body is supported by Joseph of Arimathaea and St John ⓘ, while the Virgin Mary ⓘ and Mary Magdalene ⓘ mourn nearby. The close grouping of the figures intensifies the sense of grief, while Calvary and a rising sun in the background allude to the promise of resurrection.
The right-hand light shows the Resurrection (St Matthew ⓘ 28:4). Christ rises in serene triumph, blessing with his raised hand as the guards fall away in fear. The contrast between the stillness of Christ and the disorder below emphasises victory over death and the fulfilment of divine promise.
