Allegorical Figure of Fortitude - Rouen Cathedral
Part of the base of the tomb of the cardinals of Amboise in Rouen Cathedral this figure of Fortitude was sculpted between 1515 and 1525 by Roullant Le Roux.
The figure exemplifies the Renaissance style in France, which though nfluenced heavily by Italian art and classical iconography, is still rooted in the Gothic traditions of Normandy. The female figure is classically dressed, and seated in a dignified and composed pose, with the head is turned slightly to the side, suggesting contemplation and calm strength. She display an inner resilience and courage that was traditionally associated with the virtue of Fortitude. She holds a fortified tower, a classic emblem of fortitude. The tower being a symbol of defensive strength, stability, and unshakable resolve.
