Papacy of Pope Sabinian begins 604

Following the death of Pope Gregory the Great on the 12th of March 604, Pope Sabinian became pope on the 13th of September 604. In 597 Pope Gregory had sent him as papal ambassador to the Byzantine court, Gregory did not think that Sabinian had been effective in the role. Nevertheless Sabinian was the 4th papal ambassador to the court that was subsequently made Pope.
