Joachim after his sacrifice to the temple had been rejected went into the hills to tend to his sheep and pray for a child. In this panel from the Life of the Virgin Mary (1217-1220), at Chartres Cathedral, the angel Gabriel is telling him that he will be the father of the Virgin Mary.

Having fled into the the mountains with the shepherds and the sheep, Joachim is toild by the angel Gabriel that he and Anne will have a daughter. This is one of the scenes based the Protevangelium that were sculpted by Jehan Soulas, between 1519-1521, for the Choir Screen at Chartres Cathedral
