Annunciation - Higham Ferrers
This Annunciation relief, carved in the 13th century, is part of the west doorway of St. Mary's Church, founded around 1220 under a charter from King Henry III, with the tower completed by 1250.
The figure on the left is the angel Gabriel, identifiable by the subtle suggestion of wings and a gesture of announcement, and holding a scroll. The figure on the right is the Virgin Mary, depicted with a serene expression, draped in flowing robes, and holding a book. The carving style reflects the early Gothic transition, with detailed drapery and a sense of movement characteristic of the period’s transition from Romanesque stiffness, with sculptural similarities to Westminster Abbey’s work from c. 1220-1280. The stonework, though weathered, retains its original intricacy, integrated with the porch’s Old Testament and Christian carvings.
