This Annunciation scene is from the early 13th century Life of Mary window (1217-1220) at Chartres Cathedral.

In this scene the Archangel Gabriel, with green wings and a halo, approaches the Virgin Mary with a raised hand in a traditional gesture of annunciation. The Virgin Mary, is standing with a hand across her chest in a posture of modesty and acceptance. She also bears a halo, and her gaze is turned toward Gabriel, acknowledging the message. Between them is a vase of lilies, symbolizing Mary's purity and virginity. The lilies are a standard iconographic element in Gothic annunciation scenes. The blue background is typical of Chartres glass, which uses deep colors and intricate architectural framing to elevate the scene. On either side are stylized gothic columns or architectural canopies, suggesting a sacred or temple-like setting. The blue background represents heaven and the divine, whilst the red and gold are associated with divine love and royalty.
