Legend of the hidden cup
This medieval stained glass window (c1250) is part of the legend of St James the Greater in Tours Cathedral. The central image refers to a story where two pilgrims, a father and son, were travel to the shrine of St James the Greater at Santiago de Compostela, when they stopped at Toulouse and the Inn Keeper hid a silver cup in their belongings.
The following day the Inn keeper followed them and had them searched. When the cup was found, the belongings of the pilgrims were given to the Inn Keeper and the son was hanged. The father travelled on to Compostela to complete the pilgrimage and then returned to collect the body of his son. On returning he found his son alive and still hanging from the gallows, the son saying the St James had supported him so that he didn't hang, and had fed him during the weeks that his father was away. The Inn Keeper was apparently subsequently hanged.
