Following the death of Pope Innocent V on the 22nd of June 1276, Ottobono Fieschi, was elected Pope Adrian V on the 12th of July 1276.1 He remained pope until his death, a month later, on the 18th of August 1276.

Adrian was the third Pope to be elected in 1276, and was a nephew of Pope Innocent IV. His election to the papacy was influenced by Charles of Anjou, who was in dispute with the Genoese.

Having studied canon and civil law, he became a cardinal-deacon under Pope Innocent IV. He gained a reputation for diplomacy and administrative skill when served as papal legate to England (1258–1265), where he helped mediate between King Henry III and the barons during the conflict that led to the Provisions of Oxford.

He died just 39 days after being elected pope, ao his tenure as pope is one of the shortest in papal history. He was never ordained priest or bishop, and died before his episcopal consecration was completed, so technically he never fully functioned as a bishop of Rome.
