Stephen Langton made Archbishop of Canterbury 1207

In 1207 Stephen Langton ⓘ was consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury by Pope Innocent III, despite the opposition of John of England ⓘ. The king’s refusal to recognise Langton triggered a prolonged conflict between crown and Church that culminated in John’s submission in 1213 and helped lay the groundwork for the Magna Carta.
