Saint-Martin-of-Tours Theme Pages

Born in Hungary he became a Christian at the age of 10, and joined the Roman army. Refusing to fight he left the army and travelled to Tours where he studied under Hilary of Poitiers. In 371 he became the Bishop of Tours.

This sculpture at Chartres Cathedral depicts St Martin dividing his cloak in order to share it with a begger. The date of the sculpture is between 1194-1230 and is part of the south porch of the Cathedral.

 

These stained class panel are part of a larger clerestory window in Tours cathedral that documents the life of St Martin. These panels show Martin being visited by an Angel, his consecration as bishop of Tours, and him being attacked by robbers.

These panels in the clerestory of the choir at Evreux cathedral are from about 1335, and depict St John and St Martin.

This tempera on wood painting of Saint Marting cuuting his cloak to give to a beggar, now in the Accademia Florence, was originally in the church of Orsanmichele.
