Saint-Gregory Theme Pages

Gregory I (540-604), was pope from 590 until his death. He is known for his prolific writings and for revising the worship of the western Christian church. He was canonized immediately after his death and he is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers.

Mid 14th century fresco by Dalmasio degli Scannabecchi, in the Bardi chapel, Santa Maria Novella, Florence, depicts Gregory the Great being reluctantly elected pope by popular acclaim.

 

This fresco of St Gregory the Great is by the Maltese painter Giuseppe Cali. It is part of the decoration below the main dome in the church.
