This fresco (1438–1443) by Fra Angelico shows Christ standing in the Jordan as John the Baptist pours the water of baptism over his head. The calm, winding landscape heightens the serenity of the moment. At the left, two angels stand in quiet attendance, holding Christ’s garments. On the right, the Virgin Mary, accompanied by a St Dominic, witnesses the event, linking the Gospel narrative to the devotional life of the monastery. Intended for the friars’ daily contemplation, the fresco expresses Fra Angelico’s characteristic clarity and stillness through its gentle gestures and harmonious composition.
