Fondé sous le nom de Morris, Faulkner & companie en 1861 par le socialiste et décorateur William Morris avec Ford Madox Brown, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Peter Marshall, Philip Webb, Charles James Faulkner et Edward Burne-Jones. Initiallement la companie s'est concentrée sur les décorations éclésiastiques, y compris des vitraux, des sculptures architecturales faites dans leurs locaux du 'Red Lion Square' à Londres, puis ils se sont installés à 'Queen Square' à Bloomsbury en 1865.
