This monumental statue standing at 11ft tall was carved from a single six-ton block of Subiaco marble, and depicts Christ bound and crowned with thorns, being presented before Pontius Pilate. The figure's stark, angular features and muscular yet restrained form reflects Jacob Epstein's modernist style, blending biblical themes with raw emotional intensity. The weathered stone and mossy patina enhances its haunting, timeworn presence against the Gothic arches of the remnants of the old Coventry Cathedral, that was destroyed during WW2. Made between 1934-35, by Jacob Epstein, it was given to Coventry cathedral at the wish of his widow Lady Epstein and dedicated on 22 March 1969.
