Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Geometridae
Genus:  Gymnoscelis
Species: G.  rufifasciata
Common name: Double-striped pug

These are small compared to many of the geometrids with a wingspan of 17–20 mm. They have a greyish-brown ground colour, typically with two distinct, reddish-brown crossbands (hence “double-striped”). These bands can vary greatly in intensity; some individuals appear much darker or paler. The hindwings are a paler grey with subtle crosslines. This species is notably variable in both colouration and markings, which can make identification tricky. At rest it holds its wings flat, tightly against the substrate, where its mottled pattern provides camouflage.
