This relief of Triton was made in Rome in the 16th century, and is now located in the Museum of Fine Arts, Lyon France.

Triton, in Greek mythology, is a merman-like figure, the son of Poseido nnd Amphitrite (a sea goddess). Triton is typically depicted with a human upper body and a fish-like tail, often carrying a conch shell trumpet, which he uses to calm or stir the seas. As a sea deity, Triton serves as a messenger and attendant to his father, embodying the power and unpredictability of the ocean. His image became widespread in ancient art, including sculptures and mosaics.

The sculpture's style, with its flowing drapery and detailed anatomy, mirrors the High Renaissance and Mannerist trends, where artists sought to emulate and expand upon classical forms. Such sculptures would have adorned the villas of wealthy patrons or public spaces, symbolizing power, the grandeur of nature, and the city's connection to its ancient heritage, especially under papal patronage during the Counter-Reformation, when art was used to inspire awe and devotion.
