Common Footman (Eilema lurideola)

Eilema is a genus of moths in the Erebidae family. This is a very large and diverse genus that is notable for its slender-bodied, rather inconspicuous species that often have muted coloration. Most species are small to medium-sized moths, with narrow forewings and a somewhat delicate appearance, and are typically gray, yellow, or brown, often with subtle markings. Many species show dull, uniform wing colors that help them camouflage against lichens and bark, forewings are elongated and slender; hindwings are paler, sometimes whitish or yellowish. The larvae feed primarily on lichens and sometimes algae or detritus. The genus is very large and taxonomically complex, with several hundred described species across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
