English Coronations

0800–2026

The coronation of an English monarch combines sacramental rite with constitutional affirmation. From early medieval consecrations to the established ceremonies at Westminster Abbey, the ritual has expressed both divine sanction and political continuity.

After the Norman Conquest, continental forms of ceremony blended with older English traditions. The anointing, oath, and investiture of regalia together signified the monarch’s duty to uphold law and defend the Church. In periods of dispute, such as the Anarchy or the Wars of the Roses, coronation served to stabilise contested claims.

Each coronation marks the formal beginning of a reign. The sequence of ceremonies reveals not only dynastic succession but also the evolving understanding of kingship in England.
