This cycle of seven stained glass lancet windows forms a coherent devotional programme combining the Four Evangelists with a Marian group centred on the Virgin and Child. The windows share a consistent stylistic language and iconographic approach characteristic of Gouffault’s parish work.

The Four Evangelists

Four lancets depict the Evangelists, each distinguished by a specific attribute or action, rather than by uniform book-holding figures:

This window of St. Peter receiving the keys of heaven, in the church of Notre Dame la Blanche, Selles-sur-Cher, is by Claudius Lavergne. The window is dated 1889 which is two years after Claudius Lavergne's death.

 

 

St. Giles

 

This 14th-century wall painting at Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher depicts the history and miracles of St. Giles, one of the most venerated saints of medieval France. The composition was originally made up of four sections, though the right-hand portion is now lost or no longer discernible.

 

 

 

 

St. Michael

 

The archangel St. Michael, is the principal angel and field commander of the Army of God. His name is the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against Satan and his followers. He is often depicted triumphant over the enemy.
