Richard I lands in Palestine at Acre to join Philip II of France, on the 8th of June 1191. Acre had been captured in 1104 during the First Crusade and becomes the main port for the Crusaders. However, in 1187 Saladin had captured the town, which was then besieged by Guy of Lusignan in 1189. The forces of Richard and Philip recaptured Acre in mid July. Shortly afterwards Philip and Richard quarrelled and Philip returned home.
