Papacy of Pope Alexander III begins 1159

Following the death of Pope Adrian IV, Rolando of Siena, is elected Pope Alexander III, on September 7th, 1159.

 

On the same day Cardinal Ottaviano de' Monticelli was elected as the antipope Victor IV. Both excommunicate each other but Victor IV only has support in the areas controlled by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I.
