Following the death of his father Edward I some six months earlier on the 7th of July 1307, Edward II (1284-1327),  was crowned king of England, on the 25th of February 1308.1 Edward acceded to the crown following the death of his father Edward I some six months earlier on the 7th of July 1307.

The coronation was originally planned for the 18th of February but delayed for a week. There is some disagreement as to whether the delay was political or to allow the archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Winchelsey, time to return from France. As it was Winchelsey was taken ill and the ceremony performed by the bishop of Winchester.2

During the coronation Edward's favourite Piers Gaveston caused resentment amongst the magnates by taking a prominent role in the ceremony, and at the banquet afterwards he monopolized both the event and Edward to the exclusion of Queen Isabella which caused offence to her uncles.3
