Crucifixion rood chancel arch mary virgin john

Many medieval churches had a rood loft upon which was erected a crucifix with figures of Mary and John on either side. Here at Raunds in Northamptonshire the Rood was attached above the chancel arch against a painted background of angels carry the instruments of the passion. The figures of Mary and John are on either side of the now missing cross.
