Market House - Rothwell

Rothwell is a Northamptonshire market town. It obtained a charter from King John in 1204 allowing it to hold a weekly market and annual fair.

The building of the Market House was started in 1577, designed by William Grumbold for Sir Thomas Tresham it was 300 years before it was finished by local architect J A Gotch.

The 90 coats of arm that make up the frieze around the top of the building are those of the Rothwell Hundred landowners and other Northamptonshire familes. It was listed grade I in 1950.

Jesus Hospital

Jesus Hospital is an Elizabethan almshouse, founded by Owen Ragsdale a schoolmaster and fellow of Magdalen College, it was originally for the purpose of accommodating 26 elderly men.

The two storeyed buildings at the entrance date from the C18 and 1840.  Above the archway to the south is one is a gable dated 1593. It was listed grade II* in 1950.

 

 

 

Holy Trinity Church, Rothwell

The Holy Trinity church is 173ft long making it the longest church in the county, there is also some indication that there was once an even larger church on the site. The transepts were reduced in 1673, that of the chancel chapels no date is given. It was listed grade I in 1950.
