Stained glass by Claudius Lavergne - Châteauvieux

Claudius Lavergne (1814-1887) was a painter, and art critic who studied under Ingres. In 1852 he was asked, by Adolphe Napoleon Didron, to produce cartoons for stained glass. These designs were commissioned in 1854 for the chapel in the Hôpital Lariboisière. This started his career in the production of stained glass which was to last for the next 30 years, and he was still working until shortly before his death. The company was continued after his death in 1887 by his son Noël Lavergne. His stained glass can be found all over France.

In 1861 in Le Monde he wrote a highly critical article on Delacroix's murals at Saint Sulpice. he was particularly critical of Delacroix's irreligious motives in choosing "dreadful and animated subjects" and depicting angels not as "messengers of piety and peace" but as "divine furies" Having trained under Ingres it is no surprise that Lavergne would critisize Delacroix. It is well known that these two painters disliked each other intensely
