Richard de Clare, 6th Earl of Gloucester (d1262) sided with Simon de Montfort against Henry III, and was one of the 24 barons1 that created the Provision of Oxford that forced Henry III to accept a new form of government.2 However switched sides on several occasions, and as he was the most powerful magnate outside of the immediate royal family, his fluctuating support either Henry or Simon de Montfort had the upper hand in the baronial wars.
