January Medieval Stained Glass Chartres

The left hand side of the Zodiac window at Chartres Cathedral contains the twelve months of the year. The panels here depicting January to June, were donated by count Thibault VI on behalf of Thomas of Perche.1

The central quatrefoil in this panel has an image of three faced Janus, dressed in blue, standing in a doorway behind which is a walled medieval town.

The Roman god Janus is usually shown with two faces looking into the past and the future. However in this image at Chartres he has been given three faces so that he looks into the present as well.
