Life of Peter

Dated from about 1260 this 13th century stained glass window at Tours cathedral. The window is designed with five quatrefoil designs running up the centre of the window. Each design as five image, one in each corner and one in the centre of each quatrefoil. The resulting 20 scenes documents events in the life of Saint Peter.

The bottom panels show Christ in the bottom left with an Angel holding the spear that pierced his side in the bottom right, the central image is of an angel holding the cross, and the two upper panels show monks and praying figures.

The panels in the second register show St Peter being brought before Nero, his imprisonment, beating, crucifixion, and a devil taking a soul.

In the third register is an image of St Peter in prison, and another image of the saint before a king, the central image has fire raining down from heaven, and the upper scenes show another crucifixion with a woman anointing the body, and the saint being welcomed by a bishop.

The fourth register the central scene shows the saint being beaten, there is another confrontation with a ruler, crucifixion, and release from prison.

The upper register sows the saints soul being raised to heaven by two angels. Two angels form the pinnacle of the window, and at the base of these panels two angels are uncovering the crucified body.
