The tomb is situated on the banks of the Yamuna river it is a 21 metre high domed structure, with four 12 metre high minarets topped with chhatri. It stands within a formal garden, with waterways and paths laid out in a geometrical pattern.

The building is a transition between the red sandstone struictures of Humayan's tomb in Delhi and Akbar's tomb at Sikandra, and the white marble Taj Mahal.
