Fatehpur Sikri Mughal Architecture India Muslim

Built in around 1570, by the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, Fatehpur Sikri was the new capital of the Mughal Empire and the first planned city of the Mughals. The site was chosen as it had been the camp of Akbar's religious advisor the Sufi mystic Shayk Salim Chishti, who had prophesied that the childless Emperor would have three sons. However, it became increasingly difficult to supply the growing population with water, and with threats to the Empire coming from the Kabul in the north west Akbar moved his court to Lahor in 1585. The site became completely abandoned after Akbar's death in 1605.

Designated a UNESCO World Hertitage site in 1986 it contains a number of buildings, some of which incorporate Hindu as well as Muslim symbols.
