Ottaviano Fabrizio Mossotti

 

Allegorical figure of Science on the tomb of the astronomer and physicist Ottaviano Fabrizio Mossotti (d1863) in the Camposanto Monumentale, Pisa, by the sculptor Giovanni Duprè.

 

In his youth Ottaviano went into exile settling in Argentina following the Carbonari insurrection of 1820. Whilst at Buenos Aires he was active in the fields of astronomy, topography, mathematics and physics. He became the chair of Mathematical Physics in 1841, and made important contributions to the sciences of celestial mechanics, molecular physics and optics.
