Monothelism is a 7th century heresy that holds that Christ has two natures (human and divine) but only one will. In 638 a letter by the Emperor Heraclius the doctrine was declared to be official imperial form of Christianity. Subsequent popes in Rome denounced the doctrine which lead to a schism between the western and eastern churches.
