Moses and Revalation - Lyddington Leicestershire
These are two additional lower panels (c1870) from the east window of St Andrew's Church, Lyddington, Rutland, probably by Lavers, Barraud & Westlake. These panels, in the Victorian Gothic Revival style, continue the window's narrative theme and are dedicated to the memory of John Clarke and his wife Elizabeth, with inscriptions linking to their family legacy.
The left panel depicts Moses receiving the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai (Exodus 31:18). A bearded figure, identified as Moses, is shown in a dynamic pose, carrying two large stone tablets inscribed with the commandments. He wears a white robe with red and gold accents, his posture suggesting the weight of divine law. The background features a blue sky with rocky terrain and whi te floral borders, symbolizing the mountainous setting. The scene emphasizes divine law and covenant, reflecting a theological focus on obedience and faith.
The right panel illustrates a scene from St John's vision of the white horse and the rider (Revelation 19:11-16), symbolizing Christ’s second coming or victory. A white horse rears up, with the figure of St John, in a green robe, kneeling in reverence.
The juxtaposition of Moses (law) and St John (revelation) creates a theological progression from Old to New Testament, reflecting Victorian reverence for biblical continuity.
